‘Football is a sport that has always brought excitement and passion to anyone with a desire to play and get involved. Whether it is the winning or the losing, or even just the taking part, football has so much to offer beyond two goals and ball. ‘90 Minutes of Freedom’ shows that, even when everything is taken from you, football is sometimes the only thing that remains.’ Neville Southall,
90 Minutes of Freedom is a unique book on a world rarely seen – prison football. It tells the story of HMP Prescoed FC, the only prisoner football team in Wales. It was inspired by experiences playing against teams in Kirkham and Wymott prisons in the 80’s. It includes interviews with each of the players – all serving prisoners – who explain how football in prison becomes something greater than the sum of its parts. To paraphrase Bill Shankly, the former Preston North End player, football at Prescoed isn’t just a game; it’s something far more important than that.
