Weaving with code: How can emotional attachment be designed into digital jacquard textiles using coding?
My Ph.D. research builds upon a variety of approaches to explore which factors generate emotional attachment into the practice of digital jacquard textiles and responds to an existing gap in research and data regarding emotional attachment into the digital jacquard design practice. It examines human responses to coding alongside the mechanical production of weaving on digital jacquard looms.
The role of design practice in exploring and interpreting paranormal phenomena.
The concept of para-design will be developed through a series of studies that explore, test and measure the experience of unexplained phenomena. Findings from this research project have potential to enrich a broad range of future research in the design of scenarios for health and wellbeing, enriching social and cultural relationships with place, establishing new connections with environmental ecology and developing new insights for architecture, design and spatial planning.
The development of clothing concepts in response to analysis of changing gendered social attitudes.
This interdisciplinary study mixes practice and participant-based enquiry informed by phenomenology. It aims to understand the motivations of women who choose to wear male gendered clothing for fashion and to use this to question gender assignment in clothing, through practical experimentation. Fashions’ relationship with current social attitudes, particularly referencing gender assignment, will be explored. The PhD specifically aims to develop an experimental design approach by reviewing and reflecting on the process of constructing a series of garments which respond to women’s gender related preferences.
‘Coded Cloth’: Generative design as a digital process for jacquard weave design, using code to reanimate historical jacquard pattern archives
‘Coded Cloth’ is a collaborative research project with external partners: The Silk Museum and Paradise Mill, Macclesfield. It utilises archival materials to creatively explore and interpret, pattern designs for digital-led jacquard weaving through generative design and programming. A working relationship was established in 2013 with the Mill, to research their extensive silk jacquard archives.
The project positions the researcher as practitioner, exploring the hybrid connections or realms between digital/virtual and hand/real expressions. This practice-led enquiry contributes to the development of programming as a design and production method in woven design.
Closed Loop: 3D Printing For Menswear
This practice-based enquiry examines design and manufacturing possibilities using 3D printed PET filament for menswear. rPET filament is a recycled material usually made from plastic bottles, in this enquiry I will test the feasibility of recycled polyester clothing. ‘Closed Loop’ is a complex system involving a seamless interaction between manufacture, consuming and recycling.

This project is an investigation into the making of Manchester’s Technical Colleges (1954-64). How these colleges came to exist, and their importance within the canon of Britain’s post-war architecture has been little explored and is, consequently, poorly understood.
