    After the excitement of May, we enter a relatively calm period. However, there is still plenty to enjoy in Manchester and beyond…

    PAPER will be participating in CAMPBASEL in Basel, presenting Line & Fold, an exhibition featuring the work of Louise ChambersLisa DenyerSarah EyreDavid HancockParaic Leahy, and Ruby Tingle. The fair starts on 12 June and runs until 18 June. 

    June is also your last chance to see For Space. Curated by Simon Woolham, the exhibition explores space through a variety of approaches to drawing and draws inspiration from Doreen Massey’s seminal book, For Space. The exhibition features work from Anna BarriballLayla CurtisHondartza Fraga,Jenny Steele and more. An article by Sara Jaspan about the exhibition will feature in PAPER Magazine.

    For CAMPBASEL, PAPER will present Line & Fold, a curated exhibition featuring works on paper fromLouisa ChambersLisa DenyerSarah EyreDavid HancockParaic Leahy, and Ruby Tingle. The exhibition explores the tactility of a variety of mediums and surfaces, and their ability to explore line and form.

    CAMPBASEL offers an opportunity for artists and the public to exchange ideas. It is the coming together of likeminded individual in a unique space. CAMPBASEL will take place at Holzpark-Klybeck on the Rhine. The area was a former part of the Basel harbor. Now it is home of cultural projects.

    The exhibition, for space, brings together a group of artists who emphasise and consider the exploration and excavation of space through various approaches to drawing. For each individual artist, drawing is processed through encountering, researching, and engaging with architecture and objects in the physical and virtual realms. Their works address the textural, sensory, and durational nature of psychological space, as well as the historical recording of plotted space.

    The Surface of Things is a collaboration between PAPER, Manchester and Durden & Ray, Los Angeles, and University of Salford and is part of the Manifest Arts Festival. The exhibition presents the work of established, mid-career, and emerging artists all of whom believe passionately in the capacity of abstraction to offer a purposeful means of examining the world and our relationships, our exteriority and interiority and meaning beneath and beyond the surface of things.

    Solo Exhibition: Pär Strömberg, ANIARA, Galleri Aniara in Sollentuna

    2016 marked the 60th anniversary of Aniara by Nobel laureate, Harry Martinsson. A novel that has inspired many artists, musicians and theater/film makers for generations. In 2016, Pär Strömberg also received The Sollentuna Municipal Cultural Award, and to mark this he will present work inspired by Aniara at Galleri Aniara in Sollentuna. Strömberg depicts night skies, mountains, melting glaciers, strange sky phenomena, all with a dystopian, psychological twist. These paintings serve as a contemporary commentary to the novel and the discourse of the environmental threats and climate crisis in the world today. There is not only an apocalyptic atmosphere, but one of hope and beauty and a positive resurgent atavism.

Menzel’s Foot is curated by Magnus Quaife and features the work of Lindsey Bull, Paul Cordwell, Lisa Denyer, Claire Dorsett, Jack Doyle, Stuart Edmundson, Louise Giovanelli, Richard Harris, Ian Hartshorne, Chris Hawtin, Linda Hemmersbach, Christine Lawley, Robin Meganity, Donal Moloney, Brian Mountford, Sean Penlington, and Rafal Topolewski.
