I am a filmmaker currently conducting practice-led research into the newly built environment in post-economic crisis Republic of Ireland, with particular reference to unfinished housing estates and vacant commercial property- which I refer to as 'ghost developments'.

Algorithmic iconography: Intersections between iconography and social media image research

63% of social media consists of images: about 2,000,000,000 pictures are shared daily. I use iconography to understand why people find some pictures more resonant than others. As a case study, I examine the 1,000 most widely-shared tweets arising from the refugee crisis arising from the death of Alan Kurdi, the Syrian refugee child found drowned on a Turkish beach in 2015.

Haunting Corporeality: A Cultural History of the Animated Skeleton

The visage of an animated skeleton is an omnipresent theme in the cultural sphere of horror and the Gothic, but scant little attention has been given to this powerful symbol. My research blends literary studies, art history, archaeology, and thanatology to examine how the skeleton operates as a signifier throughout Western literary, visual, and material culture, originating during Medieval Christendom as a moralistic reminder of the afterlife and subsequently becoming a multi-faceted symbol for memorializing grief, disease and community health, class struggles, and ultimately humanity's own relationship with the vastness of time.

Closed Loop: 3D Printing For Menswear

This practice-based enquiry examines design and manufacturing possibilities using 3D printed PET filament for menswear. rPET filament is a recycled material usually made from plastic bottles, in this enquiry I will test the feasibility of recycled polyester clothing. ‘Closed Loop’ is a complex system involving a seamless interaction between manufacture, consuming and recycling.

In Search of the Shortcuts – The Past in the Present. How walking and narrative interact in physically embodied space, virtual space and psychological space, in the context of a self-initiated artistic residency.

In Search Of The Shortcuts is a practice-led research project carried out from the perspective of an artist. By engaging in a practical and theoretical analysis of how walking and narrative interact in physical, virtual and psychological realms, it asserts that this interaction is vital for defining space. A self-initiated artistic residency is both central to the methodology of the project and enriched by the knowledge gained through the research. In Search Of The Shortcuts situates the past in the present, a shared affective experience around the suburban spaces of the artist’s childhood in Wythenshawe, which lies on the outer fringes of South Manchester. The artist also addresses the relationship between expanded drawing methods and narrative representation, in order to explore how the influence of Wythenshawe and the socio-political context of the 1980s have impacted on his practice.

'Believe me, I remain...': Meaning and Materiality in the Mary Greg Collections at Manchester Art Gallery

As a museum curator turned researcher, I am interested in the histories and uses of art museum collections, with particular respect to decorative art and craft. My PhD research considers the changing values, status and meaning of 'everyday' objects within the art museum, through an investigation of the Mary Greg Collections at Manchester Art Gallery.

Opening up the Wig: An exploration of the wig using photographic and sculptural strategies to reveal the relationships between the wig, the self, society and the construction of female identities.

My practice is situated in the intersection between sculpture and studio-based photography and will employ a range of strategies to unpack the function and definition of the wig, and interrogate the social context that currently produces and values it. This will involve investigating both the intention of the wig - representing, idealising and projecting the ‘feminine’ - and its material origins - the physicality of it and the cultural context that produces it. The female wig in particular offers a space for public and private ideas of femininity to interact. Women’s wigs can act as a metonym for the female body as both an artificial construct (the ideal female body), and an absence (the intended wearer, or, in the case of natural hair, the persons whose hair it was).

How might artistic practice function as trace within the archive?

My study is one concerned with the elements which make up the archival records of a performative, temporal practice. Using the theory of trace, as defined by Paul Ricoeur, I explore the shifting and fleeting nature of the artefacts produced through my work.

My research is about how to use data about an audience to create a tailored narrative, in real time, using digital media that is personal to them.

The Role of Drawing in the Regeneration of Urban Spaces

My practice-led MPhil/PhD research project will have two areas of inquiry: drawing and regeneration that will be linked by the aims and methods I deploy.
