The Proceeds of Crime Act 2002: The impact on desistance and the legitimacy of punishment
This study aims to unveil the impact of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 (POCA 20002) on the defendant and their wider families. The distinct lack of awareness and knowledge in this area means there is very little literature or debate taking place in relation to its application and impact on those subjected to a confiscation order. This project aims to address these shortfalls and make an original contribution to the field by highlighting the impact of the POCA legislation on both the offender and their wider families at a time when confiscation legislation is being strengthened (The Serious Crime Act 2015) and the recovery of proceeds is being incentivised and marketized, heightening the research relevance and necessity.
Designing for Breed: Realigning British wool within the current UK knitwear industry
Over 60 different varieties of sheep are present in Britain today, reared by over 45000 farmers (BWMB 2009). Using a practice based enquiry, this research will examine the contribution of individual breed knowledge and new technologies in developing and encouraging sustainable British knitwear design and production.

Meanwhile/Becoming: A Postphenomenological Position Exploring Vision and Visuality in Landscape Photography
Meanwhile/Becoming is a practice-led research project that investigates methods of creating photographs that do not conform to the Cartesian perspective prevalent in photographs taken with a standard format camera. The research explores the opportunity of examining a visual space other than that offered by the standard single lens reflex camera through manipulation of the pinhole camera. It uses processes that produce what the research describes as a reinterpretation of phenomenology, postphenomenology and posthumanism through photographic practice; where the photographs are expressive of the what and how humans see and the lived experience of the situated perspectives of a specific space.
A Bourdieusian Analysis of Gender Capital in Ontario College Administrations
My project examines gender identity as a form of social capital, an endless dialectic, relational and evolving within middle management fields in diverse Ontario colleges neatly concealed by occupational structures. A prism through which to examine this phenomenon is Bourdieu’s (1977) concepts of capital, habitus and field (Bourdieu and Wacquant 1992, Iellatchitch, et. al 2003). Although the theorist was ‘gender blind’, instead preferring class as the primary structure of social space, Huppatz (2012) and other feminists (Moi 1991) have adopted and expanded Bourdieu’s concepts to advance the primacy of gender as a form of social capital and a means of informing and understanding gendered practices in the workplace.
Towards a New Realism: An Investigation of the Possibilities for a Socially Engaged Painting Practice
I am proposing to examine the methodologies and signifying structures of ‘classical’, ‘critical’, ‘social’ and ‘socialist’ realist painting to determine whether they can be synthesised or adapted to generate a socially informed and democratically readable contemporary painting practice.
This study will examine the emergence of a fragile, schizoid male subjectivity in American Gothic literature whose presence in domestic, or quasi-domestic, settings results in that setting becoming sentient, mutating, moving, expanding and contracting to torment the character until death or expulsion is forced upon him. At the core of my research will be Stephen King's The Shining, Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves and Steve Rasnic Tem's Deadfall Hotel. I will be referencing the works of Derrida, R.D. Laing, Foucault, Badiou and Bachelard to identify the reasons for the development of this narrative trope from the 1970s and its proliferation post-2000 and explore the contemporary anxieties of the American male it represents.
Closed Loop: 3D Printing For Menswear
This practice-based enquiry examines design and manufacturing possibilities using 3D printed PET filament for menswear. rPET filament is a recycled material usually made from plastic bottles, in this enquiry I will test the feasibility of recycled polyester clothing. ‘Closed Loop’ is a complex system involving a seamless interaction between manufacture, consuming and recycling.

This thesis turns to manifestos produced since the late 1960s, through which important intersections between aesthetics and radical gay, lesbian and queer politics become legible.
Experiments in somaesthetic art and the psychology of multisensory perception . What are the implications of artists using galleries as perceptual laboratories or tools for exploring somaesthetic experience?
Through this interdisciplinary practice-based research, working closely with scientists, I plan to recreate a range of perceptual multi-sensory illusions. These will include somatic illusions of body ownership, [of body parts hands the face and tongue for example] as well as location and motion of the body in space. I hope to gain important insights from these experiments, which will inform a series of new artworks.
