We’re running a reading course here at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, led by Sherry Ashworth, one of MMU Writing School’s Visiting Teaching Fellows.
The course – Reading The Nineteenth Century – will be a five-session evening course, run between January and May next year, and focus on four classic Victorian novels, plus one novel of each participant’s own choice, to look at what they tell contemporary readers about the time in which they were written. Participants will have the opportunity to study the books – including Elizabeth Gaskell’s own North and South – in the beautiful Georgian house in which the writer wrote her classic novels, and which is just down the road from the university. The course is aimed at general readers, and will cost £8 per session or £35 for the whole course.
The books on the course are:
- North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
- The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens
- Danesbury House by Mrs Henry Wood
- The Woman In White by Wilkie Collins
Dates – Wednesdays, 7-9pm at the house:
Jan 24, Feb 28, March 28, April 25, May 23
